Becoming a Security Guard

Posted by Sue Harding on Saturday, October 20, 2018 Under: Security Guards Manchester
Many individuals who pursue a degree in criminal justice choose to become security guards. Besides enjoying a higher salary, many security officers have a more stable work environment than that of police officers. Some security jobs provide opportunities to learn advanced technical skills such as working with advanced surveillance equipment.

Although some security guard positions may be mundane with routine perimeter walks and video surveillance monitoring, the positions require individuals to stay on guard all the time and to be conscientious of things out of the ordinary. Security guards often work closely with the police when there is an incident and often provide valuable surveillance footage as well as witness accounts.

Private security companies may provide unarmed or armed security in uniform or plainclothes. They may provide electronic security surveillance or vehicle inspection and bomb detection. They may also offer executive and personal protection to preparation for security threat scenarios.

Housing and business complexes, transit stations and retail centers need additional security to protect property as well as individuals. Some security guards pose as customers or passersby in order to blend in with their surroundings. Others provide private security for celebrities and public figures, which requires being aware of the person's schedule, the exposure that their activities present and how best to cover them.

Some police officers choose to be part-time security guards in the evenings or on weekends, such as providing security at sporting events. The positions often pay very well, but the jobs can be very stressful to police officers, who already have to be on guard throughout their regular shifts. Being in security require a stiff upper lip while on the job, and it is important for you to make sure to get adequate rest and relaxation some of the time.

Some security guards are retired military officers who have special technology training and advanced weaponry skills. The post-911 world requires more security than ever before, and there is certainly a demand for law enforcement jobs of all kinds. Unless you have military training, a degree in criminal justice is a smart investment that will provide job security for years to come. Be aware that special background checks are performed on individuals who apply for security jobs. If you work within the United States, you must have a valid driver's license and U.S. citizenship. You can't have any felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving domestic abuse or abuse with a sexual component. If your security guard position requires driving, you cannot have any DUIs or reckless driving convictions.

Becoming a security guard is a challenging yet rewarding career path. Demand for security jobs is high, so you are sure to maintain solid employment for years to come. Take advantage of opportunities to receive training on technology that is used in private security, and remember that no matter how technologically advanced we get, there will always be a need for highly trained officers with good instincts and a commitment to maintain a safe environment.
